Ethnic
descriptors are a sign of prejudice and profiling. If you have ever
used the term black Guy, white guy, Jewish, Middle-Eastern, or Hispanic
to name a few then you are guilty. What you are saying is, "not like
me".
That Mexican, that Jew, that Arab, white trash, redneck etc.
all show an underlying distinction you make. To a lessor degree but
equally a descriptor is bald guy, fat guy, skinny guy etc. To a major
degree is spic, chink, nigger, kike, dike, and faggot.
The major degree aside, the use of these are an impersonal reference to someone, and generally not said directly to them.
Someone said the other day, "I'm not Jewish, but I'll pray for you",
the assumption being that a prayer must be interpreted or that there is
an ethnic difference in the process. I took offense at that in-as-much
that it tells me that I am the ethnicity and not the individual to them.
I wrote to him, "The only time I am reminded I am Jewish is when
someone like yourself makes a reference. I don't practice Judaism, nor
speak the language or go to religious events or observe them. My
religious observations are almost nil. Most of the time I hear about a
holiday on the news after the fact. My only association with being
Jewish is my big nose, being cheap and my N.Y. accent. Otherwise I do
not identify with it and find it odd when other people make the
reference."
I must have a bagel chip on my shoulder.
